Reecova and Stripe

Does Stripe already recover failed payments? Yes, a lot of them. Here is the part it doesn't.

Stripe Billing has real recovery tools: Smart Retries, an automatic card updater, dunning emails. They work well, for subscriptions billed through Stripe. This page maps exactly what they cover, and where revenue keeps leaking after they run.

Scan your real declines free90 days of your Stripe history, in 60 seconds.

What Stripe Billing already recovers

Credit where it is due. If you bill subscriptions through Stripe Billing and have these switched on, a large share of soft declines is already being recovered without you lifting a finger.

Keep them on. Reecova doesn't replace any of this.

Where revenue still leaks

Stripe's recovery suite is built around one thing: subscriptions billed through Stripe Billing, going forward. Four gaps sit outside that boundary.

  • Payments outside Stripe Billing

Stripe scopes this recovery suite to subscriptions. One-off charges, usage invoices, and anything you bill on raw PaymentIntents or your own logic sit outside it.

  • No single dollar figure

Stripe's recovery analytics is per-subscription. It doesn't roll every failure across your account into one number: how much you lost this month, and to which decline codes.

  • It only looks forward

The tools recover payments from the moment you configure them. They don't show what you already lost over the last 90 days, before you decided to act.

  • The code, without the decision

Stripe shows you the decline code on a failed charge. It doesn't translate each one into a plain recovery call: soft and worth retrying, or hard and worth writing off.

How Reecova fits alongside Stripe

Reecova is the visibility and recovery layer over your whole Stripe account, not a second billing system. Datadog for payments, sitting on top of what Stripe already does.

So, should you add Reecova?

You are fully on Stripe Billing, recovery configured and working.

You may not need the retry engine. You still get the account-wide dollar view and the per-decline-code breakdown Stripe doesn't total for you. Run the free scan and see if anything is left on the table.

You bill outside Stripe Billing, or you have never measured the leak.

This is the gap Reecova was built for. Run the free 90-day scan first. It shows you the number before you commit to anything.

Common questions

Does Stripe retry failed payments automatically?
Yes, if you use Stripe Billing and enable Smart Retries. It retries failed subscription invoices at times its models predict are likely to clear. It doesn't automatically retry one-off charges or payments billed outside Stripe Billing.
Does Stripe update expired cards on its own?
Yes. Stripe's automatic card updater works with the card networks to refresh saved card numbers when a customer's card is reissued, so a routine expiry doesn't cancel the subscription.
If Stripe already does this, why use Reecova?
For the payments Stripe Billing recovery doesn't reach, and for the account-wide view it doesn't give you: one dollar figure for involuntary churn, a per-decline-code breakdown, and a 90-day look back at what already leaked. Reecova runs alongside Stripe, it doesn't replace it.
Does Reecova work if I don't use Stripe Billing subscriptions?
Yes. Reecova reads failed charges across your whole Stripe account, including one-off payments and custom billing, which is exactly where Stripe's subscription recovery tools don't apply.

Stop guessing whether Stripe has it covered.

Reecova reads your last 90 days of Stripe declines and shows exactly how much you lost, code by code, and how much is recoverable. Free, no card.
